Where to stay in Sri Lanka's Little England

Little England Nuwara Eliya Sri Lanka Travel

Little England is Sri Lanka's nickname for their beloved hill country, where sweeping tea plantations and picturesque Planter's bungalows have dominated the landscape since the late 1800s.

Many original Planter's bungalows still stand today, with newer buildings modelled or inspired by the originals.

In a way, it's more English than England itself. Or at least an England that once was, on the other side of the world! With an all-important Sri Lankan twist.

There are many incredible places to stay in Little England. The grandeur of the setting combined with the unique all-embracing spirit of Sri Lankan hospitality is a match made in heaven.

I'm grateful to have stayed at many bungalows and hotels in Sri Lanka's tea country over the years and would love to share my favourites with you.

1. Thotalagala

In Sri Lanka, the phrase 'boutique hotel' springs up a lot in the travel industry, sometimes a little too generously. Thotalagala is one that truly deserves this status.

It's personal, unique, and 100% tailored to guests. A planter's cocktail in the cigar lounge? No problem. Sunset walk across the tea fields? Of course. Sunrise breakfast in the garden? With pleasure. Nothing seems too much trouble.

I would happily revisit Thotalagala again and again, despite so much choice in Sri Lanka.

2. Jetwing Warwick Gardens

Jetwing Warwick Gardens is off the beaten track and then some. But don't worry. That little flicker of panic that begins to set in while riding along a bumpy road for 15 minutes? You're almost there. And it's worth it.

Not only is the house stunning, the grounds include an organic vegetable garden and serene, undisturbed mountain views. I told you the drive was worth it!

Homegrown vegetables and herbs are beautifully prepared and presented at mealtimes.

From hearty vegetable soups to a humble leafy salad (remember, we're in Little England!), there's nothing like enjoying the fruits of someone else's labour in a homely setting!

3. Ceylon Tea Trails

Where to begin? Ceylon Tea Trails is one of a kind.

Aside from the unrivalled luxury of Dunkeld Bungalow, you won't forget the food any time soon. Think rich, tea-infused sauces drizzled on mouthwatering mains, presented with a charming little tea leaf on top. Honestly, every dish took my breath away.

Ceylon Tea Trails is the holy grail of inspiration for many other hill country boutiques. Yes, it's probably one of the most expensive hotels on the island. But if the price is manageable for you, its a once in a lifetime experience.

If not, don't worry, there are other options!

4. Jetwing St Andrews

Jetwing St Andrews was one of the first hotels to open its doors in the hill country. A short walk from Nuwara Eliya, it's a convenient base to explore the town.

While it isn't as intimate as Jetwing Warwick Gardens, they also have an organic vegetable garden and perhaps the most beautiful grounds (think pruned trees a la Edward Scissorhands and flawless flower beds) in the whole of the hill country.

It feels alive, buzzing and exciting. While higher-end boutiques offer impeccable service, the service at Jetwing Hotels is heartfelt. It feels homely on a different level- without the oh so British stiff upper lip romanticised by Colonial England.

What I'm trying to say is you will probably remember the names of the staff long after you return home!

5. Sinhagiri

If creativity, colour and quirkiness are the keys to your heart, Sinhagiri is for you. The views may not be as spectacular as other hill country boutiques, but it's the interiors that are special.

It's eclectic and fun- luxury without taking itself too seriously. It's one of those places where you may find yourself tripping out for 5 minutes and then think, where on earth am I? Wow! Isn't life amazing?
